PAL: January #2: Old and Mouldy / RageQuit!

Postby blackfly » Fri Dec 16, 2016 5:16 am

Lets get started!

For January, the kick-off of the 2017 themed PALs, we have two categories for you to jump into. This is #2!

PAL-January #2: Old & Moldy / RageQuit

Find a figure thats been on your shelf, ready to go, for the longest time, that you never were motivated enough to start, much less finish.
Find a figure that you started, but for whatever reason, abandoned. Whether that be due to frustration, spite, rage, or simply lack of motivation, pick it up! start again! Its a new year, make a fresh start, and get that shit done. You have two months!

Deadline: Feb 28, 2017.

You have 2 months to tackle a necromantic project and raise somthing from the dead, or at least from the cemetary of your painting queue.

GET TO WORK!

Here we go for a new start, I have delved into the deepest drawers and found one I primed years ago - had to blow the dust off.

Being an old fart and not having a handy toddler to show me - how do I put up a photo? - do I have to use one of those image site thingummies, photopail or some-such.

Yeah just create and account on imgur or photobucket or something and upload the pics, there should be a way to generate BBCode for them from there that you can just paste into your posts.

I would lobby hard for imgur. Much easier to work with and link from in my opinion. photobucket is a heap, imho. :)

I have so much to chose from with this PAL I don't know what to pick!

On the topic of image hosting I am currently a photobucket user but I am looking at ditching it as it is really starting to grate.

Mcfonz recommended Imgur to me when I was screaming at photobucket being a shite bucket and I haven't got any complaints so far!

I just put together a quick HowTo for posting from imgur: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2683

This is the one I have chosen, although most of my lead pile would qualify.

Oh yes! At some point I will get around to doing some skaven - that looks particularly appropriate! Can't wait to see some paint slapped on that!

So I think I'm going to tackle a giant scorpion

Image

If, and thats a big if, I have time and energy, I might go for both of them, but I'll start with one as the goal.

I painted this one somewhere around 1998, when the WHFB bestiary had just about every monster available for every army:

Image

I liked the idea of the Imperial Zoo having fighting contingents in my Empire army, so I eventually picked up 2 more, and was going to have a Champion lead them for some LD bonuses. I liked the goofball factor, as well as the chance to get the S10 hit was fun, but not a given, so didn't seem overly cheesy either. Anyway, the other two were purchased and assembled, but thats as far as that project ever went. So I think nearly 20 years in a dusty box qualifies them pretty well for this project. Got 3 Fenris bases done up in advance a couple weeks ago (as shown on the newly based one above) to nudge myself towards possibly putting them on the list once I finish the WIPs already on my desk. It sure seems like they were made for this PAL, so I'll give it a go. Primed, pinned, and ready!

Now to go google pix of scorpions for a few hours . . .

Yes Spear! Poison Wind Globadiers are some of my favourite ever models, can't wait to see your work on him!
You work on the first scorpion is ace Nate, look forward to seeing the others done!

Still not sure what I'm going with - I have a ton of stuff started, I'll have a dig over the next few days and see what takes my fancy.

Hmmm... There's a Dark Emissary languishing for years in the shelf, along with a Fenbeast. Perhaps their time has come... :)

That or an Exodite that I converted years ago, started painting last year and then gave up.

Or all of it.

I've still got the first mini I bought back in 1983 waiting for paint, an old Citadel FT Orc. It might finally be time to tickle him with the hairy stick...

I'm tackling this beast:

Image

It's an old Reaper dragon that I must have bought in the early 2000s (I recall living with my parents and moved out in 2003), but was always too intimitated to try and paint. IT IS TIME.

(It's a lovely, hefty piece of lead, too!)

Edit: First step is a new base, from an old Nokia car cell phone stand:

Indeed! It's a brilliant mini, no wonder I've never had the guts to tackle it. Still available from Reaper! Looking at the photos, apparently it was intended to stand with the tail on the ground. That explains why I had to bend it forward quite a bit :D
